Modernizing road infrastructure is key to consolidating port competitiveness.

Our General Manager highlights that the potential of port advancements in Peru can be maximized with an efficient road network that supports the arrival of megaships.

In a recent specialized publication on port development in Peru, Antenor León León, General Manager of Tramarsa, analyzed the sector’s progress and challenges, highlighting in particular the importance of complementing port improvements with efficient road infrastructure.

Antenor stated that the country’s main terminals, such as the Callao hubs and the new Chancay terminal, are technically prepared to receive megaships like Super Post Panamax vessels. However, he emphasized that these advances risk being undermined if the logistical bottlenecks affecting land transport are not addressed. “The country has high-level port infrastructure, but it lacks a road network that adapts to the new logistics scale,” he warned. According to his analysis, without functional access routes, dedicated lanes, and traffic segregation schemes, the benefits associated with the arrival of megaships—such as economies of scale and reduced freight costs—could be neutralized by congestion and higher logistics costs.

Finally, he emphasized the private sector’s commitment to port modernization: “In order for these investments to generate a real impact, a stable institutional environment and efficient connecting infrastructure are required,” he concluded.
